Global Trade Must Stay Open: Jaishankar’s Message at BRICS Meet

New Delhi – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the BRICS forum, underlined that global trade must remain open and uncomplicated. He cautioned that at a time when the world is already dealing with multiple crises, putting barriers on commerce would only deepen instability.

His remarks come against the backdrop of the United States imposing fresh tariffs on certain imported goods, a move that has stirred tensions across international markets. Without directly naming Washington, Jaishankar emphasized that large economies should act responsibly and avoid disrupting global supply chains through unilateral decisions.

During the discussions, he stressed that trade openness is not just about economics, but about growth, employment, and consumer welfare. “Keeping markets accessible ensures investments flow, jobs are created, and people benefit,” he said.

The minister also pointed out that developing nations, in particular, are more vulnerable to sudden policy shifts by big powers. In such a scenario, the spirit of cooperation and fairness in trade becomes even more essential.

Analysts see India’s stand as a balanced voice—one that reflects the concerns of emerging economies while also calling for stability in the wider global system.
